The exquisitely detailed body of the cross is made from recycled cast- steel, the fish-tail style scroll base is made from forged iron and the bobèche at the top is made from heavy duty, 1/8” thick steel.
From start to finish there are over 35 different steps involved in the creation of this candleholder including the hand applied, distressed AGED IRON finish which I achieve with professional-grade, non-toxic, paints and sealers designed specifically for metal sculptures. They are incredibly durable, vibrant and far superior to common craft store paints.
To prepare the metal pieces, I clean them with a non-toxic degreaser, I then etch them with steel grit in a blasting cabinet which creates a more receptive surface for the aged-iron finish. After blasting I wipe them clean with a soft brush, grind off any sharp edges and carefully weld the pieces together.
Paint is then applied in layers over the course of several hours - each layer is allowed to dry in between coats. I then let the paint cure for 12 hours before the distressing marks are created by hand with fine sand paper.
Two coats of protective, clear satin seal are brushed on in the final step. The hand work involved in this piece means that no two will be identical. Please review the photos carefully, they are representative of the one you will receive.
RECYCLED CAST STEEL, REALLY?
Yes! I source decorative, recycled-cast-steel pieces from various foundries and metal suppliers. It’s made from all kinds of different recycled steel pieces - imagine all the old cars, appliances and other steel “junk” that is repurposed in to something this beautiful. I love that I can incorporate recycled materials in to my designs and I hope it makes you love them even more!
USE AND CARE:
Intended for tabletop use, the back side is flat and does not have the gothic pattern (see photos) so it might be best to use this on a mantel or other surface that is up against a wall.
To clean, wipe with a soft cloth.
Can be used outdoors but to prevent rust, don’t let it sit out in the rain or in standing water. Under a covered patio area is ideal.
Never leave burning candles or other materials unattended.
ORDER TIME & SHIPPING:
My woman-owned & operated metal shop is located in New York, USA. This piece is HANDMADE TO ORDER which takes 4-6 business days (I work M-F), shipping time will add 2-5 days in the U.S. and it will travel to you via USPS Priority Mail.
Orders outside the US will be sent via Global Post International, transit times can take approximately 2-4 weeks. I ship internationally to Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK.
NO PLASTIC PACKAGING
My packaging is environmentally friendly and curbside recyclable. I use recycled kraft paper for wrapping and cushioning - no styrofoam or plastic.
